The Cross River State Ministry of Women Affairs in collaboration with Office of the Wife of Governor has observed the 2022 International Women's Day. The event which is celebrated annually on March 8, was held at the premises of the Ministry of Women Affairs with the theme: "Gender Equality Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow", Sub-theme: Women and Girls leading the change on Climate Change adaptation, mitigation and response to build a more sustainable future for all. In her welcome speech, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, Surv.Dr. Gertrude Nnanjar Njar said March 8 is always a great day for the women and girls internationally as it is a time to celebrate these species of God's creation which is no fault of theirs (ours). She disclosed that the celebration further recognizes the contribution of Women and Girls around the world who are leading the change for climate change, adaptation, mitigation and response to build a more sustainable future for all. Adding that mitigating climate change is about reducing the release of greenhouse gas emissions that are warming our planet and women have the strategies as women are champions in replanting forests and restoring damaged ecosystems, as multipliers, they are good in diversifying crops so that they are better able to adapt to changing climates, they are innovators and the solution to prevent and manage natural catastrophes. Dr. Njar posited that asking for Gender Equality, not in the sense of struggling to be equal with men but in developmental strides. She advised women to strive to raise awareness about women's equality, lobby for accelerated gender parity, raise funds for female-focused charities, break the bias whether deliberate or unconsciously as bias makes it difficult for women to move ahead. Addressing women at the ceremony, the Wife of the Governor, Dr. Linda Ayade advised women to always love, support and encourage themselves, adding that they have the right to achieve their dreams and attain greater heights in their various fields without any limitations. She called for collective efforts in ensuring that gender equality is achieved in the country despite challenges faced in the quest for their voices to be heard to stop every form of discrimination, segregation and stereotypes against women. Dr. Ayade expressed displeasure at the recent discrimination at the National Assembly where 95% of men voted against the amendment and to exclude women from leadership positions is to exclude half of the population from the exercise of their inherent talents and abilities. Also the First Lady used the opportunity to speak to parents to establish confidence in their daughters and affirm their confidence early in life. High points of the event include: March past competition by the different LGAs with Odukpani LGA clinching the first position followed by Calabar South and Municipality, presentation of awards to the Wife of the Governor and the CROWEI(Cross River Women Emancipation Initiative) President,Eti Eka Lawrentia Ita by the Lions club international and cultural displays.
